Why Is Parent Training Important in ABA Therapy?

Children use important skills throughout their day, not only during ABA therapy sessions. ABA parent training helps parents and caregivers understand the strategies being used in their child’s treatment so they can support communication, behavior, daily living skills, and independence during everyday situations. Because children may respond differently with family members than they do with their therapist, your BCBA can also help you better understand your child’s behavior and develop practical strategies that fit your family’s routines, goals, and everyday life.

Helping Skills Carry Over Into Everyday Life

An important goal of ABA therapy is helping children use the skills they learn across different people, places, and situations. This is often referred to as generalization.

When parents understand the strategies being used during ABA therapy, they can provide additional opportunities for their child to practice those skills during everyday life. Consistent approaches across therapy and home can help children use developing skills more broadly.

Skills learned in therapy become more meaningful when children can use them in everyday life.

You’re Part of Your Child’s ABA Therapy Team

Parent training is an important part of ABA therapy. It’s not about turning parents into therapists—it’s about helping you understand your child’s treatment, learn practical strategies, ask questions, and feel more confident supporting your child outside of therapy sessions.

At XYZ ABA, we believe collaboration with families is essential to individualized ABA therapy. Our BCBAs work closely with parents and caregivers to understand what is happening at home, identify meaningful goals, and help children use their developing skills across everyday routines and environments.
